The Oscars: Fashion on the Red Carpet

Last night was the 87th Annual Academy Awards, also known as “Hollywood’s Biggest Night”. Not only is this a noteworthy night for cinema, but also for fashion. The Red Carpet has almost become bigger than the awards show itself. All eyes are on celebrities strutting up and down this magic carpet, showing off their ensembles personally made for them. From Dior to Valentino, it’s hard to predict what style will be seen next.

This year, there were so many stunning gowns on the carpet, it was almost impossible to narrow it down to a few favorites. However, there were three main trends that were noticed in most of the dresses. These were pearls, sequins, and lace. Below are the three favorite dresses from the entire night:

Lupita Nyong’o sported a completely pearl encrusted gown on the Red Carpet. This custom Calvin Klein gown was made from 6,000 individual pearls of different sizes. The style of the dress is fairly simple, but the detail is phenomenal. The pearl color also looks gorgeous on Lupita’s skin tone. Can you imagine how long it took to make this dress!?

emma-stone-600x800Emma Stone literally looks amazing every single year. We’re convinced that there isn’t anything she cannot pull off. This mustard color probably would’ve looked horrid on anybody else, but with her pale skin and dark auburn hair, it looks fantastic on her. There were many sequin dresses this year, which made it hard to choose our favorite. We chose this Ellie Saab gown because of the conservative high neck and long sleeves paired with the not-so-conservative high slit. It’s the perfect combination of classy and sexy.

Finally, we saved the favorite look for last. Rosamund Pike rocked this Givenchy number last night with flying colors. Everything about this is perfect; the color, the form-fitting waistline, the lace embroidery, and even the matching red shoes. She wore natural makeup and very minimal jewelry to prevent the look from going overboard. She looked absolutely stunning.

Here at Couture Collegiate, formal season is upon us! In an ideal world, we could get our own custom-made dress like these gals, but that is WAY out of our budget. Here are some affordable Red Carpet-inspired dresses that won’t wipe your wallet dry!

London Town: London Fashion Week 2015

LFW image

With New York Fashion Week coming to a close, the focus moves across the pond to the UK for London Fashion Week 2015. The event kicked off on Friday, February 20th with the unveiling of J. JS Lee’s Autumn-Winter 2015 collection. Shows will continue through Tuesday, February 24, with Hakaan Yildirim as the last designer to take the catwalk.

Over 75 designers, including Burberry Prorsum, Mulberry, Topshop, and Vivienne Westwood will unveil their new collections on the catwalk. In addition, showrooms will be open from Friday-Tuesday for designers to better showcase their collections. Showrooms are located in Somerset House in London. Over 180 brands will be on display for the press and buyers.

Fashion Week is, by far, the hottest ticket in London right now. An invitation to any show would guarantee the sighting of designers, models, celebrities, CEO’s, and socialites supporting their favorite designers. These VIP’s are known as “front-rowers”. What and who exactly is a “front-rower?” “Front-rowers” include the exclusive and elite group of influential people in the entertainment, business, and fashion industries. These people are seated in the front row for every show they attend. Some front-rowers from London Fashion Week include: Lindsay Lohan, Kanye West, Alexa Chung, Whitney Port, Pixie Lott, Mollie King, Cara Delevingne, and Kendall Jenner!

Here at Couture Collegiate, we wish we could jet off to London to mix and mingle with the rich and famous. Unfortunately, we are in the middle of a winter storm and have midterms coming up, so it looks like we’ll be hitting the books instead :(. Of course we’ll set some time aside to keep up with the latest trends and happenings of LFW 2015. Here are some of our favorite links and resources to stay in the know:

Highlights from NYFW 2015

Unfortunately, New York Fashion Week has come to a close but we at Couture Collegiate are so excited to try out all the new trends that hit the runway. J. Mendel, Calvin Klein, Marchesa and many other designers premiered their new Fall/Winter lines.

Even though spring is hopefully approaching soon, we are looking ahead to the trends we will get to try this coming fall. Crochet and knit tops, solid colors and 90’s necklines were just some of the new trends that were featured.

Obviously, as college students we can’t afford the runway fashions because of our budget. But there are ways to adapt what we see at NYFW and make it our own, and isn’t that the entire point of fashion? So we’re going to do our best in guiding you to be the most stylish girl on your campus!

Even though every designer’s line is different, there are several fashion staples that overlap. Some of the staples this year included, layering of sweaters, thigh high boots, high necklines and the colors black and white. Not only are these styles new but they won’t fade over time and you will be able to transition them to the following fall.

Designers like BCBG Max Azria and Vera Wang frequented the colors black and white. Black and white is easy to find in trendy clothing stores everywhere, as well as being timeless pieces instead of just-on-trend prints. Online stores like Brandy Melville are great for finding cheaper clothes and the majority of their clothing comes in black and white!

The designs for DKNY and BCBG had heavy layering with knits, but what shocked us was the use of thigh high boots on several different models. Not only did BCBG use the tall boots but designers Rebecca Taylor and Alice + Olivia did as well.

Thigh high boots are great with skinny jeans, skirts and even leggings. They can pull an entire look together.

The final trend that we felt was appropriate for all you fashionistas to pay attention to is the use of the Bohemian trend. All though Bohemian is not a new style, not many people venture out of their comfort zone to try it. This fall is your time to try something new! Designer Rebecca Minkoff’s line had several different ways to pull off Bohemian as well as Rebecca Taylor’s line.

Here are some fashion week inspired pieces that we think would be perfect to try out!

Even though NYFW is over, there is so much to look forward to with all the designs  displayed this past week! To get a closer look at all the designs shown visit STYLE.COM. We hope you’re as excited as we are to experiment with our personal style after Fashion Week!

In honor of President’s Day…

Hello all! We’re so excited to be making our real first post!!

In honor of President’s Day we wanted to honor the most fashionable first ladies. When we think of fashionable first ladies the obvious choice is Jackie Kennedy.

french minister of culture Andre Malraux with his wife Madeleine received at the White House in Washington by american vice-president Lyndon Johnson and americain president John Kennedy and his wife Jackie, may 11, 1962 (Jackie wearing dress by creator Du

According to a list on some of the most fashionable first ladies include Michelle Obama, Mamie Eisenhower, Nancy Reagan and many more but Jackie O tops the list. She revolutionized the fashion world for the professional women and had elegance and class.

Jackie Kennedy was so influential in the fashion world that even Vogue, the most influential fashion magazine in the world devoted an entire story and slideshow to her. Marie Claire magazine even named her an ultimate style icon.

She had a very clean cut style that us as college girls can still aspire to attain. How do you turn her timeless style into something a more modern college girl can wear? The best possible way to get that clean cut Jackie inspired style would be to choose clothes that fit properly that are classic but cutting edge. You can get clean cut clothes from stores like J. Crew, and

So next time you’re picking out an outfit and want some classic inspiration, think of Jackie Kennedy!

Comment to tell us what you think on our very first post! And send us any pictures of your own personal Jackie Kennedy inspired outfits for the chance to be featured on Couture Collegiate at the end of the month!
