France’s Thin Model Ban

According to People Style Watch, many big fashion cities around the world have implemented bans on underweight models. France is the first country to take this ban seriously by passing a bill that says models must present medical proof from a doctor that their BMI is over 18. Breaking this law could result in six months of jail time or a $82,000 fine.

This chart compares BMIs and gives a visual for what each BMI looks like. According to this chart, a BMI under 20 is considered underweight. So, a BMI of 18 is still technically considered underweight. Even though France’s new law is not exactly promoting models to be of healthy weight, we think it’s great that France’s Parliament is moving towards having healthier models. Here at Couture Collegiate, we think that every country needs to adopt these healthier measures. Be sure to check out People Style Watch’s article on France’s thin model ban.

Concert Style

Here at JMU we just had our spring concert which was sold out for Big Sean! The concert was so great but all the different styles that everyone wore for the event was so diverse and different from what we normally see on campus! So we outlined some cool rap concert outfits that you can rock to your next concert!

The outfit above is so cute and easy to wear. Concerts outfits are about detail because you have more freedom with that specific look. Having a crochet crop top is different and then pairing it with a printed pair of cutoffs is different in that it is recreating an everyday look.

Concerts are about creativity and being comfortable. You can even get pull off those witty labeled shirts. We love this outfit and of course adding a plain gold necklace adds a girly touch to an grungy look.

Don’t forget there are easy ways for you to make your style more edgy. You can add lace bralettes and converse and some gold jewelry onto an outfit and it can instantly give your style a different feel. Personally my favorite part of my outfit was that I got to finally wear my new black and gold flash tattoos. Flash tattoos are an easy way to make a plain outfit more interesting. Make sure you visit flashtat.com for them!

Sometimes the best part of going to a concert is wearing something fun and different!

How to Create Your Own Unique Style

Do you ever feel like you’ve lost your sense of personal style? Sometimes it’s hard to maintain your own unique look when you’re on a campus with thousands of girls. Couture Collegiate has been searching around for some staples for your wardrobe to help you reinvent your style, so you stand out in the crowd.

Don’t you hate it when you show up to a Day Drink and another girl shows up in the same Tobi dress that you just got for 50% off? Here’s Couture Collegiate’s style guide to help you with this problem.

1. Green Army Jacket

Urban Outfitters $79

Urban Outfitters $79

On a cool spring day, you don’t always have the option to wear your fleece Northface     😦 Try to stand out on campus by selecting this one-of-a-kind green jacket. We love this jacket from Urban Outfitters and it can easily pull together any outfit you wear.

2. LuluLemon Leggings

LuluLemon $82

When you’re running from class to class, sometimes wearing jeans is too much. Eliminate that problem all together by opting for these comfortable leggings from LuluLemon. These leggings can be worn with Boots, Nike sneakers, or Converse! You can dress up these leggings with leather riding boots and an oversized sweater, or you can wear them to the gym with Nike running sneakers and a matching Lululemon workout tank. You can also go for a laid-back look and wear high-top converse and a flannel.

3. Hunter Boots

Hunter U.S. $148

It’s a rainy day and you have 5 classes to walk to on campus. What does one do in such a debacle? Invest in some Hunter rain boots of course! Hunter boots come in just about every color a college girl can imagine and they are sturdy enough to take on a torrential downpour. If you want to be extra unique, you can purchase the Hunter boot socks as well for those chilly days.

4. Michael Kors Watch

Michael Kors $250

A watch is an essential piece in every girls wardrobe. This timeless (no pun intended) Michael Kors gold watch is the perfect accessory to pull together any kind of outfit. To spice up your arm candy, add some gold Alex and Ani bracelets to match!

5. Free People Bralette

FP bralette

Free People $20

This bralette from Free People can be worn under an open back shirt to make your outfit look more edgy. We guarantee that you’ll be the first of your friends to have this. Not many people think of Free People as a place to buy bralettes so you’ll def start a trend with this one!

Fave Red Carpet Looks

Hey Couture Collegiate readers!

This weekend was full of star-studded events like the 2015 Kid’s Choice Awards and the 2015 iHeartRadio Music Awards. Stars are moving away from winter attire to more spring-friendly looks! Here are our top 5 favorite looks from this weekend.

1.) Jessica Szor

The actress rocked this gold number on the red carpet at the 2015 iHeartRadio Music Awards. She kept things simple by adding gold heels and black nails. Polished nails are important because they help complete your look!

2.) Sarah Hyland

On the red carpet for the 2015 Kid’s Choice Awards, Sarah Hyland went for an all white look. We like how she did all white but added a pop of color with her pink lipstick.

3.) Iggy Azalea

Look 3

While it’s true that Iggy Azalea has had some questionable looks in the past, the Australian singer nailed it with this look! Iggy looked comfortable yet elegant on the 2015 KCA red carpet.

4.) Olivia Culpo

Look 4

The former Miss Universe and now, Nick Jonas’s current girlfriend (jealous… no pun intended ;)) also rocked an all white look at the Kid’s Choice Awards. We are absolutely obsessed with her long sleeved, white dress, paired with white pumps. Looks like white may be the new color for this spring!

5.) Taylor Swift

Look 5

Could Taylor Swift be anymore perfect? No! T Swift always looks flawless, whether it’s a day spent shopping or at a red carpet event. The singer rocked this black, sequined dress at the 2015 iHeartRadio Music Awards. This dress is sexy yet chic and really shows off those famous, long legs.

There you have it! Our top 5 fave looks from this weekend. Who had your favorite look? Comment below or tweet us at @Couture_college

Your Formal Dress Style Guide

Hey Couture Collegiate readers!

As you know, it’s formal season and that means online shopping for the perfect dress for either your own formal or a fraternities! Spring is one of our favorite times because not only do we get to break out some fun clothing to wear out in the sun, but we can experiment with different kinds of dresses to wear to formal!

Here at JMU, most of the formals are a fancier version of a date function, and since we love Tobi at Couture Collegiate we thought we would go through their website and pick out some popular dress ideas for Formal 2K15!

This dress is originally $76 but is on sale for $53

The Erykah Dress, which is shown above is for the edgier girl and has metallic detailing on the front. But the back of the dress shows a surprise with the mostly open back. (You can buy backless bras at Target for $15 dollars if you choose to wear a dress like this.) The dress comes in black, pink and white. I love this dress in white because it makes the person wearing it tan and it has such a crisp look to it. If you want to wear something fun and different check out Tobi for the Erykah Dress or something edgy like it!

This two-toned dress was originally $58 and is now on sale for $40.

Two-toned dresses are so different and flirty! They make your dress unique because most people won’t go for this kind of dress. The Cut it Out Dress is not only two-toned, but it also have cut outs which without a doubt are one of the most popular fashions in formal dresses right now. This dress comes in several different color combinations but we think the light coral and lavender combo is so different and you will definitely stand outfox all the right reasons if you wear something like this!

This dress is $46.

The Make It Sweet Dress is just exactly that, sweet. This is the perfect dress for the girly girl attending a formal. It is the perfect length and comes in light pink and mint, which are both colors that would look great with some killer brown wedges. This dress is perfect for a spring formal!

This dress was originally $56 but now is only $39.

The Drop Low Shift Dress comes in Mint, Cream, Navy and Pink. We think what better way to stand out formal than to wear a bright color! This dress is classic in the front and then has a drop back on it! We absolutely love this dress because it is versatile with accessories too!

Formals are starting so soon and we would love to see your dress ideas for the season! Don’t forget to check out Tobi and the Downtown Harrisonburg Boutiques for your dresses! Send your pictures to couture collegiate@gmail.com.

Contouring 101

Here at Couture Collegiate we are obsessed with all things fashion. There’s no better feeling than wearing an amazing outfit. So many times people focus solely on clothing items and forget one of the most important ways to finish a look: Makeup. Makeup can totally transform your look whether having a light look for class or a dramatic look for a night out.

One of the latest crazes in the beauty industry is contouring. What exactly is contouring and how can you achieve this popular look? According to makeup artist Beau Nelson,“Contouring is giving shape to an area of the face and enhancing the facial structure through makeup.” Makeup artists use two different shades of makeup and carefully apply it to different parts of the face to give a more defined look. Contouring defines your cheekbones and jawline, while making your eyes look more open, and making your nose look smaller.

All of this sounds very intimidating, but with practice, contouring can easily become part of your makeup routine! Keep in mind that contouring achieves a dramatic look, as seen on celebrities like Naya Rivera and Kylie Jenner. All of these products can be very stressful on your skin! I like to go 100% makeup free during the week and reserve the weekends for contouring and having fun with makeup!

By now your probably wondering how to actually contour! Well, you’re about to find out… Here is a list of steps you should follow, along with my favorite products to get a contoured look!

1.) First you’ll need a contour palette. My favorite is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit (Sephora, $40.00) http://www.sephora.com/contour-kit-P386335 The Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit is great because it has 3 light powders and 3 dark powders.

2.) Start by applying a lighter color powder on the bridge of your nose, above your cheekbones, on your forehead, and under your eyes (be EXTRA careful here, the skin is super fragile under the eyes!!)

3.) Next, make sure the lighter color powder is blended in really well. One time i didn’t blend mine in enough, and I looked like a ghost.

4.) After blending the lighter color powder, apply a darker shade to the deeper part of your cheekbones, along your hairline, along your jawline, and on the sides of your nose. This is what will give you that defined look.

5.) This time, blend the darker color powder in. Make sure you clean any dark powder that accidentally got on the lighter powder. thoroughly blending the powder is one of the most important parts of contouring. If you don’t blend enough then your makeup will look “cakey” and fake.

6.) Next, use a sponge or blender to really set the powder into your skin (again, blending is SUPER important!). I like the beautyblender, which you can buy from Sephora for $19.95.  http://www.sephora.com/beautyblender-P228913 20 dollars may sound like a lot for just a sponge, but believe me it is totally worth it! The beautyblender is pure magic for contouring!!

7.) After, I like to add some blush on the apples of my cheeks to give a little bit of a flushed look. I love Blushbaby by MAC for $22.00 http://www.maccosmetics.com/product/shaded/156/329/Powder-Blush/index.tmpl

8.) Next, to create a dewy look, use High Beam from Benefit Cosmetics http://www.sephora.com/high-beam-P1281 (Sephora, $26.00). This liquid highlighter gives you a dewy, luminescent look. Just dab a little along your eyebrows and at the top of your cheeks, and you will have an instant glow!

9.) Done! That’s all there it is to it. At first it may be tricky to contour, but after a while it’s a piece of cake! Remember to blend well and clean any stray powder that may have gotten on your skin. Also don’t forget that contouring requires a lot of makeup that can be harmful to your skin. Go for the contoured look for special occasions, like a night out with friends or date night.

Let us know if you use this guide to contour and send us pictures! We love to hear from our readers.

There’s nothing like waking up on a Monday morning to an email from Tobi saying 50% off sitewide. If you’re a Tobi regular, you know that these sales happen semi-often. However, there has not been one for some time, so we’re excited to shop around for some cheap spring wardrobe at this AWESOME online clothing boutique!

One of my favorite things about Tobi is that they have TONS of cheap clothes and get TONS of new arrivals on the daily. And if you’re subscribed to get their emails, you have the pleasure to wake up every morning to a new arrivals email.

I wanted to share with Couture Collegiate readers what I purchased from Tobi during the sale and how I am going to wear it this spring.

1. Make My Day Tunic Dress $22

Screen Shot 2015-03-24 at 3.27.02 PM

I think this is the perfect dress to have this spring because you can literally wear this dress a million ways. I love how the model wears the dress with a flannel. I’m planning on wearing this dress with a cardigan sweater, a hat, and gladiator sandals to a day drink.

2. Soiree Top $28

Screen Shot 2015-03-25 at 1.18.54 PM

Can you tell I like black? I am OBSESSED with this top. I love the thin halter straps and the lace detail. It’s adorable how the model paired it with high-waisted jean shorts and a hat. I’m going to pair it with printed shorts or high-waisted jeans. This top is perfect for a concert or festival.

3.  Into the Night Skirt $26

Screen Shot 2015-03-25 at 2.57.44 PM

The Into the Night skirt is the last item I purchased. I think this skirt is perfect for going out in the spring and summer. I’ve seen kaleidoscope pattern A LOT so far this season. The pattern is so unique and would look so great with a black crop top, jacket, or heels! I just turned 21 in October, so this would be a great outfit to wear out to the bar this spring/summer.

In total, I spent only $76 for some great new clothes for spring! Take a study break to shop online for your new (and affordable) spring wardrobe. Hurry because the sale ends tonight at midnight, and don’t forget to use the code SPRINGFVR at checkout!

Say Goodbye to Marc

Hi there Couture Collegiate readers.

If you haven’t already heard this is a sad week in the fashion world. Everyone break out your best black attire because Marc Jacobs is closing his Marc by Marc Jacobs brand.

According to Harpers Bazaar Magazine, “The diffusion line will merge into the main line.” While this isn’t saying goodbye completely to the designer, the brand that most women can actually afford will be no more.

While you might think this is not be a big deal, remember all the handbags, phone cases and other accessories that will no longer be at your disposal. Marc Jacobs was the company that many went for professional handbags that will increase drastically in price now. This brand had a cool style that was aimed more for the trendy girl and we loved it’s unique aesthetic.

So while you can, buy everything Marc you can! Hopefully we can all get through this tragedy together.
